By far one of the busiest parts of the North Tenerife coastline is Puerto de la Cruz, an old long established harbour. Further north you have Santa Cruz, the islands capital. Santa Cruz boasts many restaurants, shops and other attractions, you will even find a McDonald here! It is a great place for couples to visit or stay near.
North Tenerife is much less tourist orientated, as a result you may prefer South Tenerife if you have children with you. They will without a doubt love the many water parks and other family tourist attractions the south of the island has on offer.
North Tenerife is more suited to tourists who want to see a more adult side to the island. Although the water parks are still easily accessible (it only takes 1 hour to drive from North to South Tenerife), if you are wanting
to visit family tourist attractions every day you may be better off staying in South Tenerife and just visiting the north on a day trip.
The weather in North Tenerife is mostly warm all year round, although not as warm as South Tenerife. That said, in the winter months the temperature rarely falls below 20oc, which is much warmer than winter in the UK!
Getting to North Tenerife can be a little more costly than getting to South Tenerife. Some people choose to use a budget airline to get to south Tenerife, then hire a car at the airport and make the journey to North Tenerife via the motorways. This can often work out as a cheaper option than taking a direct flight to the Tenerife North airport from the UK via an ordinary airline.
Unfortunately none of the UK budget airlines currently fly to North Tenerife. This is mainly due to a lack of demand. Budget airlines have to deal with large numbers of passengers to make it profitable for them to fly to a destination. As North Tenerife is not really a thriving tourist resort, there is not enough demand for companies like Easyjet, Ryanair or Jet2 to fly to North Tenerife.
However, it is still possible to fly to Tenerife South airport (TFS) and then use a hire car to travel to North Tenerife. This is not as daunting as it may first sound. Tenerife is only a small island and if you know which roads to take you should be able to cover the length of the island in little over an hour.
North Tenerife airport (also known as TFN or Los Rodeos) mainly receives flights from mainland Spain and Scandinavia. Therefore it is also an option for you to firstly fly to Spain and then transfer on to a flight to Tenerife North if you really want to avoid driving in Tenerife. Another option is taking a coach from the airport to north Tenerife. The question is do you really want to have to catch 2 air planes to get to your destination? The waiting around is likely to be longer at the airport in Spain than the journey time would be in the car once on Tenerife. Also the cost of the 2 flights combined might be the same or even more than the cost of catching a flight to south Tenerife with a budget airline and then making your own way up to the north once there.
Ryanair is currently the most frequently flying budget airline to the island of Tenerife. That said, they do only fly to Reina Sofia (Tenerife South), so the car or bus will be required if you are going to take this option. It is not only Ryanair which does not fly to Tenerife North, but also easyJet Holidays and Jet2, meaning budget flights from the UK to Tenerife North are out the window. There are options available to you if you simply must fly directly to north Tenerife, such as taking a flight with British Airways, Iberia Airlines, Air Europa or Aer Lingus. This will cost you a lot more than flying with a budget airline to South Tenerife and then transferring up to North Tenerife.
Flights to North Tenerife
Where does Ryanair fly from to Tenerife North?
Unfortunately Ryanair only flies to Tenerife South from the UK.
Where does easyJet Holidays fly from to Tenerife North?
easyJet Holidays does not fly to Tenerife North, but offers plenty of flights from the UK to Tenerife South.
Where does Jet2 fly from to Tenerife North?
Jet2 flies to Tenerife south from several UK airports, but sadly not to Tenerife North
Where does BMI Baby fly from to Tenerife North?
BMI Baby does not currently fly to Tenerife South or Tenerife North from any UK airport unfortunately.
If you do want to fly with a budget airline to Tenerife North, you will need to firstly fly to Tenerife South and then use buses, taxis or a hire car to transfer up to North Tenerife.
Obviously, there is quite a bit more choice when booking flights to Tenerife North from airlines which are not low budget, but this will take a much bigger chunk out of your holiday budget. A package holiday or a late deal may be a better option for you, but if you still do want to fly with a non-budget airline to north Tenerife, you may want to consider choosing Thomson flights, Fly Thomas Cook, Monarch or Aer Lingus.

North Tenerife is well suited to tourists wanting to see a more cultured, quieter side to Tenerife. Away from the hustle and bustle of the busy resorts in South Tenerife, life here is much more relaxed and traditional. Agriculture plays a large part in the non-tourist areas of Tenerife, particularly in North Tenerife where various types of white and red wine are produced all year round.
