Tenerife is a volcanic island, as are all of the Canary Islands. It is a part of Spain, despite being closer to Africa and was formed around 100,000 million years ago when volcanic eruptions caused the islands to rise out of the sea. Tenerife is still an active volcano, although there hasn't been a major eruption for many years now. Tours are available to the top of Mount Teide to see the fascinating volcanic landscape and lava fields, although the bus trips can involve some pretty hairy rides along very narrow mountainous passages. Be warned these trips are not for the faint hearted or those scared of heights!
Do not let the volcanic nature of the island put you off visiting Tenerife, these days, volcanic activity is constantly monitored and islanders would have many days warning of an imminent eruption. Even when erupting, liquid lava only flows at a few metres per hour and there s plenty of time to get away!
The most popular tourist resort on Tenerife is Los Cristianos in south Tenerife, closely followed by Playa de Las Americas, also in South Tenerife. For those looking for a family holiday, these are great places to stay, although if you're looking for something a little more classy, Playa de las Americas is the one you will need. If it is clubs you are after, you will want to stay in the nearby Veronicas area. This is a popular area with the 18-30s holiday groups and not recommended for families as it is a much more lively resort. All 3 areas are located on the South coast of Tenerife and are within walking distance of each other if you do not mind a 45 minute stroll along the beach front.
If you want to get away from the tourist areas of Tenerife, North Tenerife is much quieter. Most of the major tourist attractions are located within easy travelling distance of the resorts of south Tenerife. These include camel trekking, volcanic tours, water parks, zoos and much more.
The beaches in Tenerife are naturally black due to the volcanic nature of the island. If you really want a white sand beach though, there is a man made one at Playa de Las Americas which is just beautiful and backs on to many restaurants along the seafront.
Tenerife is a fantastic holiday destination for sun seekers with families, and with cheap flights available through Ryanair, Jet2 and easyJet Holidays it is not too pricey to get to!
